Two Utah court clerks are now facing federal felony charges after allegedly helping illegal aliens slip past immigration agents and out a courthouse back door.
Story Snapshot
- Federal prosecutors say two former Utah clerks misused court systems to identify and move illegal aliens away from arrest.
- Surveillance images reportedly show the clerks escorting migrants through secure hallways, then smiling and flipping off a camera.
- The case is being used to send a message under tough Trump-era immigration enforcement, including “Operation Take Back America.”[5]
- Defense and some activists try to paint the clerks as “heroes,” exposing a deep divide over illegal immigration and the rule of law.[10]
Federal Indictment Lays Out a Stunning Courthouse Escape Plot
Federal prosecutors say Jennifer Joma, age 27, and Lauren Morrow, age 26, were working at the Logan City Municipal Justice Court on April 9, 2026, when a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations officer entered with a warrant for an illegal alien who had a hearing that day.[1][3] According to the indictment, once the clerks learned ICE was present, they did not simply do their jobs. They allegedly began plotting how to help the target and other illegal aliens avoid lawful arrest and possible deportation.[1]
Prosecutors say the clerks misused court databases to check the immigration status of everyone on the docket, hunting for non-citizens instead of serving the court.[1][3] That kind of data digging is especially troubling because court systems hold sensitive information that taxpayers expect public servants to guard, not weaponize against federal law. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the clerks found multiple non–U.S. citizens, including ICE’s main target, and then intercepted them before they could exit normally through the courthouse front entrance.[1]
Surveillance Images and Alleged Obstruction of Immigration Law
The indictment says Joma and Morrow led these individuals through a secure area that normal visitors cannot use, down several hallways, and out a back door where the ICE officer could not see them.[1][3] Surveillance images described by the U.S. Attorney’s Office show the two walking with at least one migrant by the wrist and moving them into side and back rooms before guiding them out of the building entirely.[4] This is not a simple misunderstanding at a front desk; it is alleged use of restricted space to bypass federal enforcement inside a courthouse that is supposed to uphold the law, not undermine it.[1]
After the first trip out the back door, the clerks were reportedly caught on camera smiling, waving, and making what prosecutors call an obscene gesture toward the surveillance camera.[1][3] One report says Lauren Morrow raised her middle finger at the camera, which prosecutors argue shows clear intent and even pride in thwarting an ICE arrest.[3] On a second trip, Joma is accused of driving three illegal aliens away from the courthouse in her personal car before returning alone to continue her shift, leaving federal officers empty-handed.[1][3]
Serious Federal Charges and the Rule-of-Law Stakes
Based on these actions, the indictment charges both clerks with conspiracy to transport and harbor illegal aliens, harboring illegal aliens, and obstruction of proceedings before departments and agencies, specifically tied to ICE enforcement.[1][3] Joma faces an additional charge for transporting illegal aliens, linked to the allegation that she drove three of them away from the courthouse.[1] These are not small technical violations; each count can carry years in federal prison and heavy fines, reminding public employees that using government systems to shield lawbreakers can itself be a crime.[7]
The U.S. Department of Justice press release ties the case to a broader push against illegal immigration, including an initiative described in commentary as “Operation Take Back America,” focused on cracking down on harboring and obstruction.[5] Under President Trump’s second term, immigration enforcement has remained a central promise to voters who are tired of open borders, sanctuary games, and local officials treating federal law as optional. This case sends a clear signal: courthouse staff do not get a free pass if they try to turn taxpayer-backed positions into tools for illegal-alien escape.[1]
Clerks Plead Not Guilty as Activists Try to Shift the Narrative
Joma and Morrow appeared in red jail jumpsuits before a federal judge on June 12, 2026, and pleaded not guilty to all charges.[6][7] Their defense attorney has described them as “good, hard working” people caught in today’s political climate, hinting that their actions may have been driven by personal compassion or anti-ICE sentiment rather than criminal intent.[10] Support videos and social media posts frame them as heroes who helped migrants escape what activists call harsh immigration enforcement, and fundraising pages have surfaced in their favor.[3][5][8]

At the same time, ordinary citizens see something very different: court employees using sensitive databases and secure hallways to pick sides against the law. Research shows immigration arrests around courthouses have surged since earlier Trump-era policies allowed ICE to make arrests in and near court buildings, fueling clashes between federal officers and local staff.[12][13] Activist groups argue that ICE creates “fear” in immigrant communities, but for many conservatives, fear is now coming from inside the courthouse, where they expect neutral clerks, not quiet saboteurs, in public jobs paid by taxpayers.
