200 Absentee Ballots Missing In Wisconsin, Threatening Election Trust

Nearly 200 absentee ballots went missing in Wisconsin following the November 2024 election, discovered only weeks later during the post-election reconciliation process.

While election officials claim this oversight did not impact the results, the incident raises questions about the accuracy and reliability of the election process.

On December 20, 2024, the City of Madison Clerk’s Office informed the state election board of the discovery of the 193 missing absentee ballots. These ballots were found sealed in carrier containers during a routine post-election review. Though officials insist the oversight didn’t affect the election’s outcome, it highlights the potential for future errors and the vulnerability of the election system.

“We deeply regret this mistake and are committed to ensuring it does not happen again,” said the Madison Clerk’s Office, which announced new measures to verify absentee ballots. As part of the corrective action, each polling location will receive a list of absentee envelope seal numbers that will be checked against actual ballots on Election Day.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway expressed her disappointment with the oversight, emphasizing that it failed to meet the city’s high standards for election integrity. She promised a thorough review of election procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

President Donald Trump has consistently advocated for stronger election security measures, and incidents like this one in Wisconsin appear to validate those concerns. While no evidence of widespread fraud was found in 2020, the discovery of these missing ballots underscores the importance of maintaining strict oversight of the election process.
