Zelensky Sees Hope For Peace With Trump’s Foreign Policy Shift

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky voiced optimism about the prospect of ending the war with Russia during the upcoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump. Speaking with Ukrainian media outlet Suspilne, Zelensky suggested that U.S. policy changes under Trump could accelerate efforts to resolve the conflict.

Zelensky highlighted the critical role of diplomacy in achieving peace. “We must do everything to end the war next year,” he said. He acknowledged the difficulty of the task but expressed hope, saying, “The change in the policy of the United States suggests that, in my opinion, the war will be over.”

Trump has made ending the war a cornerstone of his foreign policy agenda. In a recent interview on X, Trump said, “I want to get Russia to settle up with Ukraine and stop this — millions of people being killed, far greater than the number you read about.” He added that his goal is to broker peace before taking office, emphasizing the urgency of resolving the crisis.

Zelensky underscored the importance of achieving a “just peace” that would not leave Ukrainians feeling defeated. He also addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s potential willingness to negotiate, noting, “For him, this is the destruction of political isolation. It is beneficial for him to sit down and talk.”

Trump has criticized the Biden administration’s handling of foreign policy, attributing the war to perceived U.S. weakness. He argued that the chaotic Afghanistan withdrawal signaled to Russia that the United States lacked strong leadership, emboldening Putin to act.

Zelensky’s remarks suggest cautious optimism about the new U.S. administration’s approach to the conflict. As Ukraine works toward securing its sovereignty, the potential for a policy shift under Trump has raised hopes for an expedited resolution.
