President Donald Trump revealed Monday that he would be open to offering Elon Musk a Cabinet position or advisory role in his administration. In an interview, Trump described Musk as a “brilliant guy” and said he would welcome him on board if the opportunity arose.
The possibility of Musk joining a Trump administration could further deepen their alliance, as Musk has been a vocal supporter of Trump’s campaign.
“He’s a very smart guy. I certainly would [offer him a position], if he would do it,” Trump said. The two recently had a discussion on X, Musk’s social media platform, where they covered a range of issues. Although Musk has denied some reports of directly funding Trump’s campaign, he did admit to supporting a pro-Trump political action committee.
In addition to discussing Musk, Trump also commented on the current $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicles. Trump expressed doubts about the effectiveness of tax incentives, saying they are “not generally a very good thing.” His stance could put him at odds with Musk, who leads Tesla, a major beneficiary of such credits. However, Trump remained noncommittal, stating, “I’m not making any final decisions on it.”
Trump also emphasized the need for foreign car manufacturers to set up operations in the U.S. to create jobs for American workers. “We’re going to give incentives, and if China and other countries want to come here and sell the cars, they’re going to build plants here,” he said.
