Biden Commends Secret Service Chief Despite Security Failures

President Joe Biden expressed his appreciation for Kimberly Cheatle, the now-resigned Secret Service Director, following intense criticism of her leadership during an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Biden’s praise came even as Cheatle faced a grilling from the House Oversight Committee regarding the security breach.

In a statement, Biden lauded Cheatle’s service. “Kimberly Cheatle has devoted her life to protecting our nation. Her dedication and courage during her tenure as Secret Service Director are commendable,” Biden wrote. “Her leadership qualities, especially taking full responsibility for the agency, demonstrate incredible integrity.”

Cheatle’s resignation followed a shocking incident at a Pennsylvania rally where a gunman managed to shoot Trump in the ear. Trump narrowly avoided more severe injury by turning his head. Tragically, Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed while protecting his family, and two others were injured.

During the Oversight Committee hearing, Cheatle acknowledged the agency’s shortcomings and announced an internal investigation. However, she provided minimal information and withheld documents requested by Congress, according to Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC). Cheatle also revealed there were no radio recordings from the day of the attack.

Reports from Fox News indicated that the shooter had concealed his weapon before the attack. “It was not immediately clear where he hid it,” the report stated. “By the time agents spotted him on the roof, he was already holding it.”

Cheatle explained that no counter-snipers were positioned on the roof due to safety concerns about its slope. Despite identifying the shooter as a potential threat, Trump was still allowed to take the stage. Video footage shows attendees warning authorities about the shooter moments before the incident.

Biden’s statement also mentioned plans to appoint a new Secret Service Director soon. The investigation into the security lapses continues, with Cheatle’s resignation viewed as a necessary step toward addressing these issues.
