London Arrest Of Fugitive Cartel Leader Tied To Wife’s Online Posts

A notorious drug cartel leader wanted by U.S. authorities was arrested in London after law enforcement tracked his location through his wife’s social media activity. Luis Grijalba, sought for allegedly smuggling large quantities of cocaine from Costa Rica, was taken into custody by British police following a joint effort with U.S. agents.

Grijalba’s wife, Estefania McDonald Rodriguez, regularly shared pictures of their luxurious vacations with her thousands of social media followers. Authorities monitored her posts, which included photos taken in Paris, Rome, and Japan. The images provided investigators with a trail to follow, ultimately leading to Grijalba’s capture.

British officers apprehended Grijalba in late December after he arrived in London with his wife for a holiday. The arrest was made possible after a tip-off from U.S. officials who had been tracking their movements for months. Costa Rican authorities confirmed the capture and announced the start of extradition procedures.

Despite Grijalba’s efforts to evade detection, Rodriguez’s social media activity made it difficult for him to stay off the radar. She frequently posted about their travels, prompting investigators to gather intelligence on their whereabouts. Her Instagram account was deactivated after the arrest, though older posts remained visible on other platforms.

Grijalba, who also holds Nicaraguan citizenship, is accused of operating a drug trafficking network in Costa Rica’s Limon province. The area has seen escalating cartel violence, with his organization being a major player in the region’s drug trade.

His arrest comes after years of legal challenges that prevented extradition from Costa Rica. Law enforcement officials see this development as a major step in dismantling the operations of criminal networks in the region.
