DC Officer Killed By Accidental Gun Discharge While Recovering Weapon From Storm Drain

Tragedy struck the Washington, D.C., police force on Wednesday when Officer Wayne David, a 25-year veteran, was tragically killed by a firearm that discharged while he attempted to retrieve it from a storm drain. The D.C. Police Union confirmed the heartbreaking news, stating that David was struck in the head by the accidental discharge.

The incident unfolded earlier in the day when officers observed a suspect fleeing from a suspicious vehicle and throwing a firearm into a storm drain before escaping on a motorcycle. While David and other officers were working to recover the weapon, it unexpectedly discharged, fatally wounding David. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The D.C. Police Union expressed their sorrow, asking for prayers for David’s family and colleagues, saying, “We are all devastated at this incredible loss.”

Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll praised David’s service to the community, describing him as a “true hero” who made the ultimate sacrifice. Carroll emphasized that David’s commitment to protecting the residents and visitors of D.C. would never be forgotten.

Law enforcement is continuing their investigation to track down the individual responsible for discarding the firearm. The suspect, described as a male with long dreadlocks and last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue shorts, remains at large.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser highlighted the dangers faced by police officers daily, noting that while the incident appears to be a tragic accident, it serves as a stark reminder of the risks officers take every day to protect the public.
