Helen Comperatore, the widow of Corey Comperatore, a firefighter who was killed during the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, has refused a phone call from President Joe Biden. Helen stated that her husband, a dedicated Republican, would not have wanted her to speak to Biden.
In an interview with the New York Post on Monday, Helen explained her decision. “I didn’t talk to Biden,” she said. “I didn’t want to talk to him. My husband was a devout Republican, and he would not have wanted me to talk to him.”
Although she declined the call, Helen emphasized that she does not blame Biden for her husband’s death. “I don’t have any ill will towards Joe Biden. I’m not one of those people that gets involved in politics,” she said. “I support Trump. That’s who I’m voting for, but I don’t have ill will towards Biden. He didn’t do anything bad to my husband. A 20-year-old despicable kid did.”
Corey Comperatore was praised for his heroism after his daughter, Allyson Comperatore, shared that he died protecting his family at the rally. “He shielded my body from the bullet that came at us. He loved his family. He truly loved us enough to take a real bullet for us,” Allyson wrote.
The shooting occurred at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a gunman, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire. The attack resulted in the death of Corey Comperatore and seriously injured two others, while Trump sustained an injury to his ear.
Helen’s refusal to speak with Biden underscores the strong political convictions within her family. While she continues to support Trump, she remains focused on the personal tragedy her family has experienced rather than attributing blame to political figures.
The assassination attempt on Trump has led to calls for increased security at political events and a closer examination of threats against public figures. The bravery and sacrifice of individuals like Corey Comperatore highlight the profound impact of political violence on ordinary Americans and their families.
As the nation grapples with the consequences of the attack, the Comperatore family’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of such acts, emphasizing the need for unity and understanding in these turbulent times.
