Donald Trump, the GOP presidential nominee, made a bold commitment during a visit to the southern border on Thursday, announcing plans to impose the death penalty for those convicted of child and women sex trafficking.
Trump’s border visit highlighted his priorities for a second term, focusing on strict penalties for human smugglers and traffickers. “We will impose a 10-year minimum sentence for anyone guilty of human smuggling, a guaranteed life sentence for anyone guilty of child trafficking, and a death penalty for anyone guilty of child or woman sex trafficking,” Trump said.
Trump’s speech came as he took aim at the Biden administration’s handling of the border crisis, specifically criticizing Vice President Kamala Harris for what he called “open border policies.” Trump promised to reverse these policies by sealing the border and implementing the largest deportation campaign in U.S. history.
The former president also spotlighted the personal stories of families who have suffered due to illegal immigration. The mother of Rachel Morin, allegedly murdered by an illegal immigrant in Maryland, broke down as she described her loss. Another mother shared the harrowing details of her 12-year-old daughter’s tragic death at the hands of illegal immigrants.
In addition to his focus on trafficking, Trump proposed harsh penalties for major drug dealers, calling for the inclusion of the death penalty on immigration documents for traffickers. “We’ll also impose the death penalty on major drug dealers,” he said.
