According to recent internal polling by the Teamsters union, President Donald Trump has taken a substantial lead over Kamala Harris in the race for the 2024 presidential election. The polling reflects strong support for Trump, marking a shift among union members who have traditionally backed Democratic candidates.
The Teamsters Electronic Member Poll, conducted between July 24 and September 15, showed that 59.6% of respondents favored Trump, while Harris only garnered 34% support. In addition, 6.4% expressed support for other candidates. A separate Teamsters Research Phone Poll, conducted from September 9 to 15, mirrored these results, with Trump leading at 58% and Harris trailing at 31%. A further 6% were undecided, and 5% said they “don’t know.”
These results signal a significant change in political sentiment within the union. Historically, union members have leaned towards Democratic candidates, but Trump’s message appears to have gained traction among the rank and file. Sean M. O’Brien, General President of the Teamsters, emphasized that the union’s endorsement process is centered on its members’ voices.
“Our members’ opinions must be the driving force behind any decision the Teamsters make,” O’Brien said in a post on X. While no official endorsement has been made, the union’s General Executive Board is expected to make an announcement soon, potentially on Wednesday.
As Trump’s support grows within the labor movement, the Teamsters’ eventual endorsement could have a lasting impact on the 2024 election.
