Brutal Attack on Vulnerable Elderly Parents
Darius Hazard allegedly launched a violent assault on his elderly parents in their bedroom during the early morning hours of November 24, 2025. The 44-year-old son shoved Venture Hazard, 76, and Donald Hazard, 83, to the floor before striking them with his fists and throwing a small fan at his father. Venture suffered from severe scoliosis and advanced arthritis, making her particularly vulnerable to injury during the attack.

House Set Ablaze While Parents Trapped Inside
After the physical assault, Hazard poured gasoline throughout the first floor and upstairs of the family home on Francis Street in North Adams, Massachusetts. He then ignited the accelerant with a match, creating a deadly inferno that trapped his injured parents inside. As flames engulfed their home, the elderly couple called out desperately to their son, pleading “Come back” and “Help me, help us, we are in trouble.”
Neighbors discovered smoke billowing from the residence around 6 a.m. and immediately contacted emergency services. North Adams firefighters courageously entered the burning structure but discovered both victims deceased in the living room. Autopsy results confirmed both parents died from smoke inhalation, with additional injuries from the brutal assault including fractured ribs, bruising, and head trauma.
Community Shocked by Respected Family’s Tragedy
The Hazard family had been pillars of the North Adams community for decades, making the horrific crime particularly stunning to residents. Jamie Lynn King, who knew the family for over 30 years, expressed disbelief stating “He’s the last man on earth that you could imagine doing something like this. He’d drop everything to help somebody if they needed it.” The suspect worked consistently at Stop & Shop and was known for his punctual attendance and helpful nature.
Hazard was arrested approximately ten hours after the fire when a state police detective spotted his vehicle in a Clinton, Massachusetts Walmart parking lot. He confessed to authorities that he became “really, really angry” while helping his father lift his mother after she had fallen multiple times that morning. District Attorney Shugrue recognized the tremendous courage of first responders who entered the burning home without hesitation, acknowledging the lasting psychological impact on those who witnessed the scene.Hazard faces charges of arson and two counts of murder, remaining in custody without bail. He is scheduled to appear in Northern Berkshire District Court on December 29, 2025, as the community continues processing how a trusted family member could commit such an unthinkable act against the elderly parents who depended on him for care.
