In a recent appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) defended Vice President Kamala Harris’ strategy in the 2024 race, describing her approach as pragmatic rather than a departure from her progressive roots. Sanders noted that Harris is making the necessary adjustments to win while still holding on to her core values.
Sanders was asked by host Kristen Welker if he thought Harris had abandoned her progressive agenda. He responded, “No, I don’t think she’s abandoning her ideals. I think she’s trying to be pragmatic and doing what she thinks is right in order to win the election.” He also made it clear that while their views aren’t identical, he still sees Harris as a progressive figure.
Harris has backed several progressive policies, including a permanent child tax credit and a plan to create millions of affordable housing units. Sanders praised these efforts, noting that the child tax credit had previously cut childhood poverty by 40% when it was included in the American Rescue Plan.
Although Sanders sympathizes with rural and working-class Americans who feel ignored by the government, he believes Harris’ proposals are a step in the right direction. He pointed out that her housing plan could help solve the nation’s housing crisis, which is a significant issue for many Americans.
Harris has also proposed price controls on groceries, claiming it will stop “price gouging” in the industry. Critics argue that these price controls could negatively affect grocery stores, which typically operate with small profit margins.
Sanders remains confident that Harris is staying true to her progressive values, even if her approach has shifted to meet the demands of the campaign.
