Ron DeSantis To Take On Gavin Newsom In Governor Showdown

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) will take center stage in a primetime debate that will be televised by Fox News at 9 p.m. Thursday.

A primetime debate between potential Republican and Democratic presidential hopefuls is common, especially less than a year away from a heated election. What makes this debate uncommon is that the two presidential hopefuls participating have virtually no chance of being their party’s nominee in 2024.

President Joe Biden does not have any real competition for the Democratic nomination and former president Donald Trump is so far ahead in the polls that he does not have any real competition for the Republican nomination.

The DeSantis-Newsom debate is more about competing ideologies and contrasting policies from two governors leading two of the most populous states in America. In the lead-up to the debate, the two governors are ramping up the negative rhetoric and attacking each other on the issues over which they disagree.

The two governors will offer different visions for America, but as they offer those visions, viewers can already see what their policies have done in their respective states over the past few years.

As The Washington Examiner described, “On one side is Newsom, whose destructive governance forced record numbers of Californians to flee the state as it descended into chaos, violence, and decay. On the other side stands DeSantis, who has led Florida to new heights through times of crisis and division.”

“People already side with DeSantis and revival — they have voted with their feet. Under Newsom, California’s population declined for the first time in history, while DeSantis’s leadership made Florida the fastest-growing state in the nation,” the article continued.

An article from Yahoo is also calling the debate “a battle of the two Disney governors.” A title stemming from the fact that both states are well-known for their relationship with Disney.

About 20 months ago, a public feud erupted between DeSantis and Disney based on Disney’s opposition to the “Parental Rights in Education” law that some referred to as “don’t say gay.” The company and the governor are still at odds, while the relationship between Newsom and Disney has remained strong.

Fox News host Sean Hannity will moderate the debate that will take place on the Fox News network. Newsom has already questioned if the conservative host can treat he and DeSantis as equals and that question will be answered Thursday night.

“Throughout the debate, Hannity will highlight a variety of issues in each state, including the economy, the border, immigration, crime, and inflation. Presented without an audience, the governors will have equal opportunity to respond and address each issue,” stated a Fox News press release about the upcoming debate.
