President Donald Trump Targets Maine Governor As Administration Investigates Noncompliance

President Donald Trump is making an example out of Maine Gov. Janet Mills after she refused to comply with his executive order banning male athletes from competing in women’s sports. The Trump administration quickly followed with a federal investigation into the legality of Maine’s policies.

During a White House meeting with governors, President Donald Trump questioned Mills about whether Maine would enforce the federal mandate. Mills avoided a clear response, saying the state follows both state and federal law. The president immediately warned that federal education funding would be cut off if Maine failed to comply.

Mills refused to back down, responding, “See you in court.” President Donald Trump welcomed the legal battle, predicting an easy victory and casting doubt on Mills’ political future.

Shortly after their exchange, the Trump administration’s Department of Education launched an investigation into the Maine Department of Education. Officials cited reports that the state is allowing male athletes to compete against female students, violating Title IX protections. Greely High School was specifically named in the probe for allegedly permitting at least one male student to participate in girls’ athletics.

Craig Trainor, acting assistant secretary for civil rights, stated that Maine must comply with federal law or forfeit federal education funds. He made clear that taxpayer money would not support policies that violate Title IX.

At CPAC, President Donald Trump continued to criticize Mills, calling her refusal harmful to female athletes. The audience reacted with boos as he called out her administration for putting radical gender policies ahead of fairness in women’s sports.
