Ocasio-Cortez Blasts Trump’s Bronx Rally As Fundraising Ploy

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) accused former President Donald Trump of colluding with oil executives to raise gas prices as she criticized his big rally in the Bronx, characterizing it as a fundraising attempt to trick local residents. In an interview on Spectrum News NY1’s “Mornings On 1” Thursday the congresswoman claimed Trump recently met with oil industry leaders promising favorable policies in exchange for campaign donations.

“We just saw that the former president met with oil executives last week saying ‘Hey you give me a billion dollars and I’ll make sure that you get the policies that are favorable to raising gas prices and making sure that a lot of these companies continue to price gouge without proper oversight or regulation'” Ocasio-Cortez said. “So the idea that he’d be bringing [gas prices] down when he’s cashing it for the same folks that are bringing those prices up I think is a little bit suspect.”

Isn’t the Green New Deal all about disincentivizing oil?

The New York progressive who co-authored the Green New Deal, a proposal to drastically reduce U.S. reliance on fossil fuels, expressed skepticism about the authenticity of Trump’s support in the borough.

She predicted the rally crowd at Crotona Park would consist largely of out-of-town supporters rather than Bronx residents.

“I think in terms of a crowd size, it’s less about the size and more about who is there for holding a rally in the Bronx” Ocasio-Cortez said, suggesting Trump “kind of has to travel around with folks instead of going into communities and actually building authentic support.”

Trump’s rally was a huge success, with many NYC supporters ecstatic about the chance to see President Trump speak live.
