Catholic leaders are raising alarms about Kamala Harris’ policies and their impact on religious freedom. Organizations such as Students for Life of America, the Lepanto Institute, and the American Life League have pointed to Harris’ record, which they argue conflicts with Catholic values. As the most liberal senator in 2019, Harris has taken several positions that concern the Catholic community.
The Biden-Harris administration’s use of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act has been criticized for its bias against pro-life activists. Since the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade in 2022, the FACE Act has been enforced 130 times against pro-life individuals but only three times against pro-abortion protesters.
Additionally, a DOJ memo targeting Catholics attending Traditional Latin Masses and parents protesting radical gender ideologies has raised further concerns.
As California’s attorney general, Harris prosecuted pro-life journalist David Daleiden, who exposed Planned Parenthood’s sale of fetal tissue. She also backed a bill requiring pro-life pregnancy centers to refer women for abortions, a measure that the Supreme Court later struck down. Furthermore, Harris’s opposition to religious exemptions for companies like Hobby Lobby and her criticism of the Knights of Columbus for their stance on abortion and same-sex marriage have been viewed as direct attacks on Catholic values.
Catholic leaders warn that Harris’s actions pose a significant threat to religious freedom and the autonomy of Catholic institutions. They argue that her record demonstrates a clear opposition to the principles and rights of religious organizations, highlighting the need for vigilance in protecting religious liberties.
