Hawaii Gov. Josh Green has indicated that President Joe Biden may soon decide whether to continue his 2024 presidential campaign. Green, who recently met with Biden and other Democratic governors, suggested that if Biden steps aside, Vice President Kamala Harris might be named his successor.
Biden has faced increasing questions about his mental acuity, particularly after a challenging debate performance last month. Some Democrats are urging him to reconsider his campaign, though Biden continues to highlight the backing he receives from party leaders, especially governors.
“If the president believes the race is unwinnable or if his close advisors suggest he step down, he will,” Green stated. He noted that Biden’s decision is expected within days, coinciding with Congress returning to session.
Green, who was a physician on Hawaii’s Big Island before becoming governor, likened Biden’s situation to that of respected elders in families who may have moments of forgetfulness but are valued for their experience and wisdom. “I will support the president until he decides otherwise,” Green said.
Despite Biden’s insistence on running, discussions about his potential withdrawal have intensified. Green pointed out that both Biden and former President Donald Trump, who is slightly younger, have their off days but emphasized that temperament is more important than age. “We need a leader who remains calm and collected, not one who tweets impulsively at night,” Green commented.
Green argued that if Biden steps down, he should have the authority to name his preferred successor. “The Democratic Party would likely be thrilled if Biden designates Harris,” he said, highlighting her background as California’s attorney general and her role as an influential African American leader.
During a recent meeting with governors, Biden joked about his health, saying everything was fine except for his brain. Green clarified that this comment was a self-deprecating joke and was misunderstood when leaked. “It was clearly a joke, demonstrating his intact cognitive function,” Green explained. The meeting was candid and unscripted, with governors voicing diverse opinions.
The country now waits for Biden’s decision, which will have a significant impact on the Democratic ticket for 2024.
