FBI Documents Reveal Anti-Trump Bias Behind Trump’s 2020 Investigation

Recently disclosed whistleblower documents reveal that a former FBI agent with a history of anti-Trump bias played a major role in launching the investigation that led to Special Counsel Jack Smith’s prosecution of President Donald Trump. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) released the records, which show that Timothy Thibault, a former FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge, was deeply involved in shaping the case.

The case, internally referred to as “Arctic Frost,” was officially opened on April 13, 2022, but the emails indicate that Thibault had already taken steps to move the investigation forward months earlier. A message from February 2022 shows that he sent a subordinate draft language for the case, laying the foundation for the probe that would later be used against Trump.

FBI policy requires strict oversight for investigations involving high-profile political figures, yet records suggest that Thibault acted outside his jurisdiction. An April 2022 email confirms that Trump was added as a target in the case following Thibault’s recommendations.

Richard Pilger, a DOJ official in the Public Integrity Section, was also involved in reviewing the case and approving its escalation. Grassley had previously criticized Pilger’s involvement in election-related investigations, citing concerns about political bias within the DOJ.

During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Grassley highlighted the records while questioning Kash Patel, Trump’s pick for FBI Director. He pointed to the documents as further evidence of politically motivated investigations within the FBI and DOJ.

Grassley and Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) are demanding that Special Counsel Jack Smith retain all records tied to Arctic Frost, as the investigation’s origins continue to raise questions about the FBI’s handling of the case.
