The FBI, now led by Director Kash Patel, has opened an investigation into former Director James Comey over allegations that he ordered an unauthorized surveillance operation against Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. The accusations stem from a whistleblower who provided testimony to the House Judiciary Committee, revealing details about the reported infiltration.
According to the whistleblower, Comey approved an operation in 2015 to place two undercover FBI agents inside the Trump campaign. The agents, described as “honeypots,” were allegedly instructed to develop relationships with campaign staff to obtain information. The whistleblower further claimed that Comey personally directed the effort alongside high-ranking officials, including former Deputy Director Dave Bowdich and senior FBI official Paul Abbate.

The operation reportedly ended when media outlets became aware of one of the agents’ identities, forcing the bureau to shut it down to prevent exposure. While this activity took place outside the official Crossfire Hurricane investigation into alleged Trump-Russia ties, it raises further concerns about FBI conduct under Comey’s leadership.
Patel, who was sworn in as FBI director last week, had pledged not to engage in politically motivated investigations. However, with this whistleblower report surfacing, he has authorized an internal review to determine whether Comey’s actions violated FBI policies or federal laws.
The FBI has yet to issue an official statement regarding the scope of the investigation. Meanwhile, Comey has not publicly addressed the allegations. Patel’s review of the case underscores a broader effort to address past abuses within the agency and ensure the FBI operates without political interference moving forward.
