Chiefs Lose Second Straight, Mahomes Throws Fit On Sideline

With just over a minute left in the Bills-Chiefs game, and the Chiefs down by three points, one of the most spectacular plays of the season unfolded. Patrick Mahomes hit a wide-open Travis Kelce for about a 25-yard gain when Kelce lateraled the ball back to Kedarious Toney who went 25 yards for the score.

It was an incredible play, especially the perfect lateral from Kelce to Toney. There was a flag on the play, but even the flag looked like it was going to simply be an offsides penalty on the Bills and the play looked like it would stand.

The call, instead, went against the Chiefs and Kedarious Toney for being offsides, a penalty rarely thrown against the offensive team. The play was called back, and instead of a touchdown that would have put the Chiefs in the lead, it was second-down and the Chiefs needed 15 yards to keep the drive going.

Mahomes and the Chiefs still had more than a minute left in the game, two timeouts, and they were on the Bills side of the field. If the team could have kept their composure, they had a great opportunity to at least send the game into overtime with a field goal or maybe even score another touchdown for the win.

Instead, Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid lost their cool. Mahomes threw a temper tantrum on the sidelines and even chased down three of the officials. It was not a good look for the quarterback or the NFL to end a game in that fashion.

In the end, the Chiefs turned the ball over on downs and the Bills won the game and kept their playoff hopes alive in the process. The Chiefs, on the other hand, are losers of two straight and are still fighting for home-field advantage in the playoffs.

Reid and Mahomes expressed their irritation over what they consider poor officiating over the past two games.

“It’s a bit embarrassing for the National Football League for that to take place…I didn’t have a protractor out there, but it’s a bit embarrassing.” Reid said.

“Loss for words, man,” Mahomes said. “To end another game and we’re talking about referees, it’s bad for the NFL.”

The second game Mahomes is referring to is the previous week’s game against the Green Bay Packers when a pass interference call was not made in the final minutes of the game leading to the Chiefs’ loss.

Toney looked to be offsides, and he never looked up to ask the officials if he was lined up correctly, something that all receivers are taught to do. Toney was benched immediately following the play.
