Disgraced former Rep. Liz Cheney, the former chair of the House Republican Conference, is calling for the GOP to lose control of the House and is publicly complaining that a new neoconservative party may be necessary if the party does not move away from President Donald Trump’s influence. Cheney and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, have already endorsed Kamala Harris for president.
Cheney has accused the GOP of abandoning its principles under Trump, stating that the party has “rejected the Constitution” in its efforts to support him. She believes that if the party does not return to a platform of substance and policy, a new political entity will need to rise in its place to represent true conservative causes.
The Cheneys have long been known for their support of foreign interventions, a stark contrast to Trump’s non-interventionist policies. Trump has emphasized that the Republican Party is moving away from neoconservatism, a position Cheney seems to fear may be permanent.
Cheney also raised concerns about the future of election integrity within the GOP. She voiced her opposition to Rep. Mike Johnson becoming Speaker of the House, warning that Republicans may refuse to certify election results if Trump is not declared the winner in 2024.
