Billy Horschel Uses Golf Club To Move Gator Off Course In Florida

A routine day at the Cognizant Classic took an unusual turn when an alligator wandered onto the green. Billy Horschel, a PGA golfer and Florida native, didn’t hesitate to step in and move the reptile using nothing but his golf club.

The incident happened as Horschel finished the sixth hole at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens. A police officer attempted to redirect the gator but lacked a tool to safely guide it away. Seeing the delay, Horschel grabbed a club and took action, using it to nudge the animal toward the water.

Spectators gathered around to watch the encounter unfold. Some recognized the humor in the moment, pointing out that Horschel, who played college golf for the Florida Gators, was once again facing off against a gator — only this time, it wasn’t a rival team.

Afterward, Horschel explained that he grew up around alligators and had learned at a young age that they usually avoid people. He noted that they tend to be aggressive only during mating season or when protecting their nests. While he had seen his father grab their tails to guide them back into the water, Horschel said he preferred to use a club instead of his hands.

Despite the unexpected interruption, Horschel maintained focus, finishing his round with a 5-under 66. Meanwhile, Jake Knapp put himself in the record books with a rare 59, marking one of the lowest rounds in PGA Tour history.

Florida’s golf courses are no strangers to wildlife encounters, and this tournament was no exception. The presence of alligators on fairways and greens is just another reminder that nature remains an ever-present part of the sport in the Sunshine State.
